The Unsaid..

Past: We Two; Ours Two.

Present: We Two; Ours One.

Future: We Two; Ours None!!

With the changing days, the concept of Family Planning is also changing. Why not?

Modernization and Urbanization has increased the awareness among people in the Society, that women are no longer be treated as what they were from ages ago. Continuous efforts have made life better for women amongst men. Men are no longer the only 'bosses' and Women are no longer the only 'slaves'. We all are convinced that, women enjoy a better position in Society. Good.

According to a recent analysis of figures collected from the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka (under National Rural Health Mission - NRHM), 99% of those who underwent sterilization during 2008-09 are women. I repeat, 99% of those who underwent sterilization (family planning operation) during 2008-09 are women.

Family - the basic unit of Society, still seems to be under the strong clutches of victimizing women. Though often we speak to substantiate that women enjoy almost equal status as men in a Family, it seems to be too far from reality. Why should only women undergo family planning operations alone? Are there no ways available to sterilize men? There are.. but men opt not to!! Why so? Have we ever thought of this?

Great people have been dreaming of the so-called Moral Society, not from today, way back from ages. But, with such a thing happening to women in the very basic unit of Society - Family, how can one expect Morality in the whole system of Society? This clearly shows that we (men) are not wholeheartedly sharing our social status with them (women). Have women gotten the justice they deserve?

I just feel that the change should be initiated right in the Family, and not in the Constitution with the '33%' thing. We shout aloud in public that women are given reservation in education, jobs, buses, railways, panchayats, parliament, what not? But, we never say what have we given to them in the Family!

Stats Speak the Unsaid - with 99% of them subjected to family planning being women, the torture on women does continue to exist in Silence and in Abundance. So, my dear 'gender counterparts', please be prepared; your turn is not too far..

  2. A strong word of determination is what necessary Prathima. Every individual (no matter men or women) have the right to live life their own way. So, why impose things? :o)

  3. Prashanth...what a coincidence ...

  5. Prashant, nice article..Its nice angel to look things at, but how can u attach 99% of women getting sterilized with gender bias? How many women are tortured to get sterilized? I think this article is biased towards Men ;) Women usually get sterilized in hospital soon after delivery coz its easier to handle all pains at once... and i hope no men goes for labor room for producing a baby ;) otherwise vasectomy will be a common one i think. what ever the thing is its ultimate goal is to avoid fertilization.. so why bother whether its a men or women...Lets think as Indians...and its good for INDIA collectively ;)

  6. Ateeq, a warm welcome to my blog :o)

I just was thinking why ONLY WOMEN should be sterilized, when there are ways to sterilize men too?

You are right, men never go to labor rooms for delivering a baby. But, without men, women alone never can deliver a baby!

When women have taken all the PAIN of delivering a baby, why again add the pain of family planning operation? Why can't men SHARE?

As you said, ultimate goal is to avoid fertilization, yes! That can even be achieved by stopping sperms, not only ovum right?

Good we all are INDIANS, but, lets go a little ahead and think that either men or women, we all are LIVING BEINGS.. :o)

Contrary to the theme of this post, I did find out that Indian woman is reluctant to let her hubby undergo sterilization!! As though, sterilization, is their BIRTH RIGHT :P

  7. well said Prashant,

Sharing of Love in the form of Sterilization is it? Let me tell you few Advantages of Female sterilization:

1- Female sterilization is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
2- rarely any long-term health consequences,
3- it won't affect your sex drive,
4- it won't interfere with spontaneity of sexual intercourse, or intercourse itself, (as other forms of contraception can)
    and
5- it won't affect your hormone levels or periods.

Let me tell you...its been proven that men with vasectomy complained of decreased sexual activities, so in this case not only men even his wife will also suffer... ;)

so i think its not the matter of Women getting sterilized, its the matter of effective barricade for child birth.

in 1970s we had a problem with Vasectomy in Uttar Pradesh, people complained that Govt is emasculating young men,

in 1980s we had a problem that why no one is getting sterilized.

and now in these day we have problem of why only women get sterilised...

we Indians have problem in every thing.ie lets be a man or a women!

  8. Ateeq,

Its not SHARING STERILIZATION, I mean to say - SHARING THE PAIN :o)

Enough of the debate on who should get sterilized - man or woman. Well, now, we will think the other way round. Is it not possible to avoid sterilization for family planning?

One more thing, out of my Medical Knowledge (being in the same profession), sterilization in men won't affect sexual libido or interfere with erection/intercourse. Its a different debate altogether; out of the scope of current topic though.

If you think something is a problem, yes, it is a problem indeed. Else, if you take things in a positive note, seems to be a healthy debate.

Thanks for your comments, keep them coming in :o)

  11. Hi Prashanth.
Just read the post. Very true. And the statistics that you quote are indeed alarming. On one hand, we have talks of women empowerment and on the other, the stark reality.

  12. Deepa,
    Welcome to my Blog!
You are right. What we 'preach' and what we 'do' seems to be the two ends of a straight line.
