ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರೇ ಶತ್ರುಗಳು..

ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯನಾಗಿ, ಇಂತಹ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಯಡಿ ವೃತ್ತಿಪರ ವಿಚಾರವಾಗಿ ಚಿಂತಿಸಿ ಬರೆಯುವ ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯತೆ ಬಂದೊದಗಿರುವುದು ಬಹುಶಃ ದೌರ್ಭಾಗ್ಯವೇ ಎಂಬುದು ನನ್ನ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ. "ಹೆಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಹೆಣ್ಣೇ ಶತ್ರು" ಎನ್ನುವ ನಾಣ್ನುಡಿಯು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿನ "ಯುವ" ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಅಕ್ಷರಶಃ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುವಂತಹ "ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶವು ಇಂದು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿದೆ" ಎನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ "ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶವನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ" ಎಂದೆನ್ನಬಹುದೇನೋ?? ತಿಳಿಯದು.

ಕಳೆದ ಗುರುವಾರ, ಪೊಲೀಸ್ ಪೇದೆಯೊಬ್ಬರು ನನ್ನ ದ್ವಿಚಕ್ರವಾಹನವನ್ನು ತಡೆದು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿ ದಾಖಲಾತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಎಲ್ಲ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಅವಸರದಲ್ಲೇ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ನನ್ನನ್ನುದ್ದೇಶಿಸಿ ಅವರು ಕೇಳಿದ ಹಲವು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿ ಕಾಲೇಜು ತಲುಪುವ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ತಡವಾಗಿ, ತರಗತಿಗೆ ಗೈರುಹಾಜರಾದರೂ ಸಹ ನಮ್ಮ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆದ ಅಲ್ಪಾವಧಿ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆಯ ಕೊನೆಗೆ "ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯ ವೃತ್ತಿ, ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ, ಸರ್ಕಾರೀ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರ" ಬಗೆಗೆ ಅವರಿಗಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಭಾಸವಾದ ಉನ್ನತಾಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನು ಇಮ್ಮಡಿಗೊಳಿಸಿದ ಸಂತಸ-ಸಮಾಧಾನವಿತ್ತು; ಆದರೆ ಇಂದು, ಅದೇ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿ ತೀವ್ರ ನೋವು-ಅಸಮಾಧಾನ ನನ್ನನ್ನಾವರಿಸಿದೆ.

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಪಶುಪಾಲನಾ ಮತ್ತು ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಸೇವಾ ಇಲಾಖೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಖಾಲಿ ಇರುವ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಹುದ್ದೆಗಳನ್ನು ಭರ್ತಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಅರ್ಹ ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಂದ ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಅರ್ಜಿ ಅಹ್ವಾನಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಭರ್ತಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಉದ್ದೇಶಿಸಿದ್ದ ಹುದ್ದೆಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಕಾರಣ, ಸರ್ಕಾರೀ ಇಲಾಖೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ಸದವಕಾಶ ಸಿಗುವುದಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಯುವ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರೂ ಹರ್ಷಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು; ಆದರೆ, ಅದು ಬಹುಕಾಲ ಉಳಿಯದಿದ್ದುದೇ ವಾಸ್ತವದಲ್ಲಿನ ದುರಂತದ ಸಂಗತಿ.

ಸರಿಸುಮಾರು ಐದು ದಶಕಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಕೃಷಿ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಹಾಗೂ ಬೀದರ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಮಹವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇರ್ಪಡಿಸಿ, 2004ರಲ್ಲಿ "ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ, ಪಶು ಹಾಗೂ ಮೀನುಗಾರಿಕೆ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಗಳ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ"ವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಯಿತು (www.kvafsu.kar.nic.in). ಅಲ್ಲದೇ, ಇದೇ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಸ್ವಾಮ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಎರಡು ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ ಹಾಸನ ಮತ್ತು ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಘನ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ ನಡೆದುದೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಅನಾಹುತಗಳೇ ಸರಿ!

"ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರುಗಳು ಉತ್ತಮ ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರರಲ್ಲ" ಎಂಬ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೋ ಏನೋ, ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಸೇವಾ ಇಲಾಖೆಗೆ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರೇತರರನ್ನು ಆಯುಕ್ತರನ್ನಾಗಿ (ಆಡಳಿತ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥರು) ಸರ್ಕಾರ ನೇಮಕ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಪುಷ್ಟಿ ನೀಡುವಂತೆಯೇ, ನೂತನ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬೀದರ ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯವು "ಮಾನ್ಯತೆ" ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಅವಸಾನದ ಭಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೆ, ಹಾಸನ ಹಾಗೂ ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯಗಳು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಪರಿಷತ್ತಿನಿಂದ ಮಾನ್ಯತೆ ಪಡೆಯದೇ, ತನ್ನ ಎಲ್ಲಾ 72 ಪದವೀಧರರ ಭವಿಷ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿಸಿವೆ. ಮಾನ್ಯತೆ ಇರದ ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಪದವೀಧರರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಸರ್ಕಾರೀ ಇಲಾಖೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಹುದ್ದೆಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದುವರೆಯಲೂ ಸಹ ಅರ್ಹರಾಗದಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ದಾರಿಕಾಣದೆ ಕಂಗಾಲಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ದಿನಾಂಕ 27-05-2013 ರಿಂದ ಚಾಲನೆ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಹುದ್ದೆಯ ನೇಮಕಾತಿ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು ತಾರತಮ್ಯದ ತಾಣವಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತನೆಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಅರ್ಹ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯ ಪದವೀಧರರು ದಾಖಲಾತಿ ಪರಿಶೀಲನೆಗೆ ಒಲವು ತೋರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ಅರ್ಹರಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಲಾಗಿರುವ ಪದವೀಧರರು ಪರಿಶೀಲನಾ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಗೆ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸದ ಕಾರಣ ಕೆರಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಕುಲಪತಿಗಳು, ಇಲಾಖಾ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿಗಳು, ಮಾನ್ಯ ಪಶುಸಂಗೋಪನಾ ಸಚಿವರು ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನ್ಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯವರನ್ನು ಅನೇಕ ಬಾರಿ ಭೇಟಿಮಾಡಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ತ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಒದಗಿಸಿಕೊಡಲು ಕೋರಲಾಗ್ಯೂ ಇದುವರೆವಿಗೂ ಯಾವುದೇ ಧನಾತ್ಮಕ ಕ್ರಮ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳದ ಕಾರಣ ಕಂಗೆಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ತಾರ್ಕಿಕವಾಗಿ, ದಾಖಲಾತಿ ಪರಿಶೀಲನೆಗೂ ಮುನ್ನವೇ ಕೆಲವು ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಹರ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕಿಸಿರುವ ಸರ್ಕಾರೀ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ನಿರ್ಣಯ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಾರ್ಥಕವೆನಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ, ಆಡಳಿತ, ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ, ಮಾನ್ಯತೆ, ಇಲಾಖೆ, ನೇಮಕಾತಿ, ಅರ್ಹತೆ - ಇವೆಲ್ಲವುಗಳ ಸಂಕೋಲೆಯಿಂದ ದೂರ ಸರಿದು ಆಲೋಚಿಸಿದೆವಾದರೆ, ವೃತ್ತಿಪರ ಹಿರಿಯರಾದ ನಾವು, ಯುವ ಪಶುವೈದ್ಯರುಗಳಿಗೆ ವೃತ್ತಿಪರತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರುಗಳು ಉಜ್ವಲ ಭವಿಷ್ಯವನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಗಳಿಸಲು ಅನುವಾಗುವಂತಹ ಸಂಭಾವಿತ ವೃತ್ತಿಪರ ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸಿಕೊಡುವ ಬದ್ಧತೆಯ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ನಿಭಾಯಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ವಿಫಲರಾಗಿರುವುದು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಗೋಚರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಮುಂಜಾನೆಯ ಕನಸು

ಜೀವನವೇ ಹೀಗೇನೋ.. ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿರದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶದ ನೆಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿ, ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕ ಸಂಕೋಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆಸೆದು, ಅರಿವಿಗೆ ಬಾರದ ಅಗೋಚರ ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿ, ಬದುಕಿನ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಹೊಸದೊಂದು ಭರವಸೆಯನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸಿ, ಆ ಮೂಲಕ ಅಂತರಾಳದ ಮೂಲೆಯಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೋ ಗುಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ಅಡಗಿ ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದ ಕೊರಗುಗಳಿಗೆ ತಾತ್ಕಾಲಿಕವಾದರೂ ಶಾಶ್ವತವೆಂಬಂತೆ ಭಾಸವಾಗುವ ಪರಿಹಾರದ ರೆಕ್ಕೆ-ಪುಕ್ಕಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿಸಿ, ಹಗುರಾದ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಆಕಾಶದೆತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾರಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ..

ಮೇರಿ ಮೇಡಂ (ಹೆಸರು ಬದಲಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ), ಕಛೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮೊಡನೆ ಸಹೋದ್ಯೋಗಿ; ಸರಿಸುಮಾರು ನನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಯ ಆಸುಪಾಸಿನ ವಯಸ್ಕರು. ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಸುದೀರ್ಘ 36 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಸೇವೆಯಿಂದ ವಯೋನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದರು. ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ, ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅನುಭವದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಿರಿಯನಾದ ನಾನು ಕಳೆದ 5 ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಿಂದ ಕಲಿತ ಪಾಠ ಅನೇಕ. ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ವಸತಿಗೃಹದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಿದ್ದ ಅವರ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಬದುಕೇ ವಿಚಿತ್ರ; ಗೃಹಿಣಿಯಾದರೂ ಒಂಟಿತನವೇ ಅವರ ಒಡನಾಡಿ. ವಾಡಿಕೆಯಂತೆ ಅವರ ಸೇವಾವಧಿಯ ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನದಂದು ಕಛೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೀಳ್ಕೊಡುಗೆ ಸಮಾರಂಭವನ್ನು ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅವರ ಬಗೆಗೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನಾಡುವ ಸರದಿ ನನ್ನದಾದಾಗ, ಕೆಲವೇ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳ ನಂತರ "ಅವರು ಈವರೆಗೂ ನನಗೆ ತೋರಿರುವ ತಾಯಿಯ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಆಭಾರಿ.." ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಹೇಳಿ ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದೆ.

ಸಮಾರಂಭದ ನಂತರ ನೇರವಾಗಿ ನನ್ನೆಡೆಗೆ ಬಂದ ಮೇರಿ ಮೇಡಂ, "ಇದು ನಿಮಗೆ ಸರ್, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಓದಿ.." ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾ ಆ ಮೊದಲೇ ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದ ಒಂದು ಬಿಳಿಯ ಲಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ಕೈಗಿತ್ತರು. ಅದರಲ್ಲೇನಿರಬಹುದೆಂದು ಅಂದಾಜಿಸದೇ "ಥ್ಯಾಂಕ್ಯೂ ಮೇಡಂ.." ಎನ್ನುತ್ತ ಅದನ್ನು ಕಿಸೆಯಲ್ಲಿಸಿಕೊಂಡೆ. ಆ ದಿನ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬರುವಾಗ, ಬಸ್ಸಿಗಾಗಿ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಾ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದ ನನಗೆ ಲಕೋಟೆಯ ನೆನಪಾಗಿ, ಅದನ್ನು ಕಿಸೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರತೆಗೆದು ಬಿಡಿಸಿ ಮೇರಿ ಮೇಡಂ ಅವರ ಕೈಬರಹದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಲೇಖನವನ್ನು ಓದಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ.

ಮುಂಜಾನೆಯ ಕನಸು

ಮುಂಜಾನೆಯ ಮಂಪರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಕನಸು. ಕರಗಳನ್ನು ಜೋಡಿಸಿ ಕಣ್ಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ತರನ್ನು. ಕರ್ಣಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೃದುವಾದ ಮನೋಹರವಾಗಿ ಕೋಳಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು ಒಂದು ಅಶರೀರವಾಣಿ.

"ನೀಡಿರುವೆನು ನಿನಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟ ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು, ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಯಾವ ವರವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಮತ್ತೆ ಈ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ?"

ಪ್ರಭುವೇ, ನನಗೆ ನೀನು ನೀಡಿರುವುದು ಸಪ್ತ ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ. ಒಂದು ಕೊರತೆಯನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟಿರುವೆಯಲ್ಲಾ; ಅದನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸು ಪ್ರಭುವೆ

"ಅದೇನೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರೆ ಪೂರೈಸುವೆ ಆ ನಿನ್ನ ಕೋರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು"

ಅಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಊರಿಗಿದ್ದ ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಬಸ್ಸು ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಮಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಮೇರಿ ಮೇಡಂ ಮೂಲತಃ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ಥರಾದರೂ, ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಮೇಲಿದ್ದ ಅವರ ಹಿಡಿತವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಬೆರಗುಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದೆ. ಲಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ಕೈಚೀಲದೊಳಗೆ ಜೋಪಾನವಾಗಿ ಇರಿಸಿ, ಬಸ್ಸಿಗೇರಿ ಕುಳಿತೆ. ಪ್ರಯಾಣದುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಚಿಟ್ಟೆಯಂತೆ ಅನೇಕ-ಅನಾವಶ್ಯಕ ವಿಚಾರಗಳೆಡೆಗೆ ನಿರಂಕುಶವಾಗಿ ಹಾರಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು; ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ವಾಹನ ಹಾಗೂ ಜನದಟ್ಟಣೆ ಬೇಸರ ತರಿಸಿತ್ತು, ಆಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಈಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಜೋಂಪು ಹತ್ತಿ ಕೊನೆಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮನೆ ತಲುಪಿದ್ದೆ.

ಇದಾಗಿ ಹಲವಾರು ದಿನಗಳೇ ಕಳೆದುಹೋದವು; ಮೇರಿ ಮೇಡಂ ಕಛೇರಿಯ ತಮ್ಮ ವಸತಿಗೃಹವನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸಿ, ನಗರದಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೋ ಒಂದು ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ಮನೆಗೆ ತೆರಳಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳೇ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಯಾವುದೋ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ತೋಚಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಗೀಚಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಹಾಳೆಯ ತುಣುಕೊಂದನ್ನು ಕೈಚೀಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಡುಕುವಾಗ, ಅಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೂ ನಾನು ಮರೆತೇ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದ ಮೇರಿ ಮೇಡಂ ಅವರ ಲಕೋಟೆ ಕಾಣಿಸಿತು. ದಿನೇ ದಿನೇ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ವಾಹನದಟ್ಟಣೆಯಂತೆ ಉಲ್ಬಣಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ನನ್ನ ಮರೆಗುಳಿತನಕ್ಕೆ ಶಪಿಸಿ, ಲಕೋಟೆಯ ಓದನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಿದೆ:

ಬರಿದಾದ ನನ್ನ ಮಡಿಲು, ಸರ್ವ ಸದ್ಗುಣ ಸಂಪನ್ನನಾದ ಒಂದು ಪುತ್ರ ರತ್ನವನ್ನು ದಯಪಾಲಿಸು ನನಗೆ

"ಈ ಕಲಿಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ವ ಸದ್ಗುಣ ಸಂಪನ್ನನಾದವನನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುವುದು ಸಾಗರದೊಳಗೆ ಸಾಸಿವೆ ಕಾಳನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿದಂತೆ ಅಲ್ಲವೆ?"

Bird Flu hits Bangalore

Still hung with the 'so good' taste of hot & crispy boneless bucketful you ate at the nearest KFC restaurant yesterday? Well then, don't fear on seeing this post; "People need not panic as the influenza has not spread as of now" says Mr. Revu Naik Belamagi, the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Govt. of Karnataka.

High Security Animal Disease Laboratory at Bhopal confirmed that the blood samples of Turkeys drawn from Central Poultry Development Organization & Training Institute, Hesaraghatta, Bangalore were tested positive for Avian Influenza (H5N1) virus, following death of many turkey birds since early this October. Immediate to the report from Bhopal, all turkey birds were culled & safely disposed; a 10Km radius area around Hesaraghatta was declared 'Alert Zone'; sale of poultry meat & eggs was prohibited and movement of all poultry & its products from and into the alert zone was also banned.

A short personal interruption; I had earlier drafted a detailed writeup to publish, for this being my 100th Blog post, which was then edited to fit well within a paragraph in view of Social Awareness gaining importance. Even now, am finding it hard to accept the fact that I somehow managed to creep across the milestone, which should sincerely be attributed to all my readers for their constant support and encouragement. In our recent conversation, Dr. T. S. Ramananda who is a well-known writer and one of my role models suggested me that I try to publish a Book since this Blog is reaching a limited audience. Following his thought & this 100th post, am seriously thinking to bring out a compilation of some selected posts from this Blog of mine in the form of a Book. Rapid Response Teams consisting of Veterinarians, Para-vets & supporting staff have been already formed to tackle the present Avian Influenza (commonly called as Bird Flu) chaos and also to take up further investigations, followed by appropriate measures to cull infected birds and dispose them off safely; thus checking further infections. As in this case, professional hazards have always been a challenge to Veterinarians and Para-vets, who deserve all the credit for keeping the situation under control. Appropriate services are also being extended by officials and staff from the Department of Health, Police & BBMP in this regard.

Since its first occurrence in humans in 1997, AI (H5N1) virus has been of utmost importance worldwide for it being the most pathogenic strain of its group and its ability of undergoing mutation to infect humans as well. Typical bird flu symptoms in humans include cough, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, fever, headache, runny nose, sore throat & muscle aches. Hundreds of humans, mostly farmers, farm women and those working with poultry have fallen sick of Avian Influenza and statistics reveal that up to 60% of those who became ill have died. 'The Telegraph' reported that Indonesia has been the nation hardest-hit by bird flu, with 150 deaths reported between 2003 and 2011. However, solace is the fact that there are no deaths reported due to bird flu since beginning of this year in the Country.

Basically, Indian food habits are said to destroy most of the food-borne infections; following the thorough cooking at constantly higher temperatures. Said this, can we still continue eating poultry meat & eggs? Is it 'unsafe' to consume chicken & eggs from the commercial eateries? - Finding an answer to these questions for now is not all that easy. 'Once Saved Always Saved' concept might tend to keep us away; but the yummy McEgg Burger is definitely too much a temptation!!

Hesaraghatta in Bangalore has been known for its richest biodiversity across the Country; for it being the site of many significant and advanced animal husbandry activities from ages. It was a nice place of weekend hangouts with kids for Bangaloreans, where they could enjoy the beauty of nature to its fullest. But not for now; it would be better to keep away from places in and around Hesaraghatta - One, not to get ourselves infected and Two, not to facilitate the spread of infection beyond the nucleus of alert zone.

days with Dengue..

"Excluding the fact that you have been tested positive for Dengue, do you have any other health issues?"

This question from Dr. Gopala Swamy H. C., to me, was a very tough one to take up. I think this is one thing that makes some people great - 'handling extremely serious things literally lighter'. At that moment, it really took a lot from me just to think about anything other than Dengue, for which I was declared positive.

"As you know, there is no treatment for any Viral infection; so is with Dengue Fever. Only way is to treat it symptomatically and avoid any further complications. It is a self-limiting disease" he continued, after picking the glimpse that I was taking a while to get tuned to his tempo.

"aaammmm.." following a gush of fresh oxygenated blood to my gray matter, I replied "Am unable to digest anything I eat.. everything just gets vomited".

"Do you have a history of Gastritis?".

"Yes, I do; a severe form of it though" - while I said this, it made me remember 'All Good Things Come With A Price'; a couple of years ago, Marriage came to me with Gastritis.

"Fine, lets stop your Antibiotics; will put you on Acera-D, which will act to reduce instances of Gastritis; Immunace Forte, which is just a vitalizer; and if you continue to record temperature, take Febrex 650mg tid. Drop by the Lab to let them draw your blood sample again and see you tomorrow morning along with the Report" - he handed over the prescription to me with a smile, which made me realize that every minute of his does count.

"Okay; Thank you Sir.." I slowly made my way towards the Lab.

It was a fortnight ago, on a lovely Sunday in a birthday party, I started feeling all the 206 bones and over 650 muscles in my body aching together; which wasn't very usual, I knew. A dose of Paracetamol and Diclofenac only could give temporary relief; but later that night I was all feverish with severe head-body aches, which made me almost shiver to death. Next day morning, I struggled to hold my balance and gait, walking to the Doctor next door; who straightaway put me on Cipro, which never gained me independence from illness while the Country witnessed yet another Independence Day. With constant fever ranging between 102 to 103^oF with unbearable aches all over, I had no other go than paying a visit to a nearby Multispecialty Hospital.

When it all just ended with another prescription for a higher Antibiotic, I couldn't keep any mum - "Sir.. could we go in and have the complete blood picture looked at?". "It might be too early to look into it but anyways, we shall.." said the Doctor. My suspicion proved true; the Platelet and Total Count were deep down the normal range! Without my consent, they immediately drew my blood sample for the Dengue NS1 Antigen Test; the assay ran positive. "You need to get hospitalized without any delay, we got to start off with Platelet Transfusion" Doctor said. It was then my Dad and Sister went to the Family Physician for a second opinion, who referred me to Dr. Gopala Swamy.

Next day morning, soon as I received the report from Lab, wound was seared with hot iron; the Platelet count had gone further down.

I knew Dr. Swamy was playing a mind game while he said "No worries, we shall somehow bring up the Platelet count".

"Sir, is it this the right time for Platelet Transfusion?", I was sounding all worried.

"Don't think so. I have seen patients recovering gradually with a Platelet count as low as 50 thousand; yours is in the 1 lakh range. Hospitalization and Platelet Transfusion is recommended only if your count drops down to 30 thousand and below. Until then be happy at home, take complete rest and try to eat well. Will put you on few shots of Steroid, which I have seen to improve Platelets; If someone asks you if Steroids are the treatment for Dengue Fever? NO. But, it works; how?  don't know", his confidence was backed up by huge experience.

Soon I was in the Emergency Ward for the first Steroid shot and rest of them were in queue to be shot into me by my Sister at home; this is why I feel one shouldn't have a Doctor sib.

I went on to find out what possibly would have gifted me this viral infection; the culprit was none other than the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. It was a relief to know that Dengue could spread only by the bite of a vector Aedes; pretty sure I wouldn't be spreading infection to others since hundreds of mosquitoes were clapped to death during my 'NO AEDES' campaign and it was well over seven initial days of infection, during which period one can possibly be a potential source of infection to fellow humans through bite of an Aedes. But there always was the danger of internal hemorrhage due to low Platelet count, leading to Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever or Dengue Shock, which could possibly be lethal.

Following appropriate medical attention by Sister, continuous prayers of my Parents and unconditional care from my Wife, I started improving and my Platelet count was ticking up in the next five days. It was only then I gained some confidence and strength within to fight out Dengue. I was somehow lucky enough not to end up with severe complications of Dengue Fever. Today’s blood picture showed my Platelet count well up in the normal range, a good sign for sure.

Am sure Raju & Vivek, who were expecting something from me about '1947' in this Blog would be taken by surprise on reading what really followed. It's been a month I went on leave at work, huge responsibility resting on me in that front as well.
